Definition

What it means

A ticker symbol is the short code of letters, and sometimes numbers, that identifies a security on an exchange. Symbols appear in price quotes, brokerage platforms, SEC filings, and news headlines, and they are how investors look up any listed company. U.S. exchanges historically limited symbols to a few characters, which is why familiar one-to-four-letter codes dominate. The same company can have different symbols on different exchanges, and symbols can be reused after a company delists. Knowing the exact symbol matters because similarly named companies can have confusingly similar codes.

An example

For illustration, typing a single letter like F into a brokerage quote box pulls up Ford Motor Company on the NYSE. Headlines write shares of F rose 3 percent because the symbol is unambiguous shorthand. An investor who guesses at a symbol instead of verifying it risks buying the wrong company entirely.
